This Child Was Someone’s Son

In the UK today many newspapers have used this image to ask the government to change its attitude to immigration. The image is of a young Syrian child washed up on the beach. These images challenge us at the absolute core – they show us that we have responsibilities and, as in all aspects of stewardship, we are accountable for our response to this most awful of human situations

In addition there is a weblink to a petition – it says:

‘…people are dying and they need our help. If we cannot see that, then we have no right to look away from the consequences of inaction’

Let us not get confused between what might be presented as an economic issue but is really a humanitarian issue.

‘For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Matt 25:35-36

So where are we being challenged? What do those Gospel words mean to us today? What it means to be good stewards of the lives of our sisters and brothers?
