One More Day

So I am sitting here in an airport waiting for a flight to the other side of the country that I was supposed to be on yesterday.  Three hours before my flight, I received the text informing me that my flight had been cancelled. I could quickly schedule a new flight, but all flights from NC to Seattle were booked. So this morning was the first flight, in fact only flight today, available. I was planned to be away from my family for 10 days, so at least the nice benefit to all this was one more day with them.

It got me thinking about the value of a day, especially a day spent with those we love. God has not promised us any set number of days to spend with our loved ones. In fact, we never know when the day we are experiencing will be our last day. Nine people in South Carolina didn’t see the end of their days coming. Today as I write this, people everywhere will be experiencing their very last day on earth; they just don’t know it yet.  Many of them are spending this day with those they love. Their loved ones don’t know today is the day either.

So as you are reading this, dear reader, think about the real possibility that today is your last day with us. I do not want you to panic or be sorrowful. After a moment of reflection, I hope you will instead seize the opportunity to make this day count.  Share yourself more with someone. Pray a little harder. Accomplish that task you have been putting off for some time now. Tell those you love that you love them, really love them. Show them that love in some way.  Don’t let the day end in any arguments.  Make sure you have put all disagreements to rest. It could be your last day, so finally go ahead and compromise!

When the day is over, give thanks to God for the chance to serve him again.  Then go to sleep, knowing that if this is it, you had a great day. And if you wake up in the morning, start again wondering if this day could be the last, and live it like it’s the best present God ever gave you. Because, in fact, one of the greatest gifts God ever gives any of us is one more day.
